DescriptionThis wharf, at the mouth of a small creek which has been straightened during land reclamation on the south-west shore of the Dee estuary, was associated with the Llannerch-y-Mor lead smelter (NPRN 409787). The first edition of the 25-inch O. S. map, 1872, shows a rail link from Hanmer Colliery (SJ164803), but by the date of the 2nd edition, 1899, this had disappeared and a tramway had been constructed from the lead works. By 1912 this in its turn was disused, and rail access had again been established from Mostyn, probably for maintenance of the sea wall.
In 1979 the former ferry ship 'Duke of Lancaster' (nprn 506943), built in 1956 by Harland & Wolff for British Rail's Heysham-Belfast service, was beached here, intended to become a hotel and leisure facility. Its future is uncertain.
