Description
The carriage shed stands alongside the former route of the Padarn Railway, built to the gauge of 4ft (1.22 metres) and opened in 1843 to carry slate from the Dinorwic quarries to Porth Dinorwic. The shed is some 260ft (79 metres) long, and constructed from sawn slate slabs of different hues, with a slab carved 1895 over the door at the north west end. The five rectangular openings spaced along each side were formerly closed by louvred shutters. The shed is now roofless, but the triangulated roof trusses of angle iron and two lines of wooden purlins are still in situ. The sliding doors have disappeared but the upper rail from which they were hung is still in situ. The building is almost identical to the locomotive shed at Penscoins (NPRN 409699).
