One of the first attempts at a Garden Suburb in south Wales was at Fforestfach. The first phase, covering 3.2ha, was commenced in 1910; one hundred houses were originally planned and built, set along a curved 18m wide avenue some 300m long, down to the centre designed for future continuation. Space was allowed for allotments, a bowling-green and a playground.
