A small housing development is shown on the 1951 Ordnance Survey 6in map, labelled 'Garden City.' Prior to 1913, the Merthyr Co-operative Garden Village Society leased some 6.5ha of land, the lessor granting in addition 0.4ha (one acre) free for a recreation ground; the land slopes to the south, rising to about 300m. The original plan, by R. Unwin, provided for about 170 houses in total; the 1951 OS map shows 92 of these constructed by 1948.
