Description
The Galon Uchaf Housing Estate in Penydarren, set on a high and exposed position straddling the 320m contour, was built for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council in the 1930s to replace some of the worst housing in the Borough. The ground on which the estate stands was former farm land belonging to Galon Uchaf farm (the site of whose buildings lie under Sixth Avenue), thus avoiding any potential hazards of old underground workings or other contamination. Most of the original dwellings are traditional semi-detached two storey houses with large front and rear gardens, in sharp contrast to much of the other housing in the area at the time.

Further housing was constructed on areas of the site immediately after World War II.
