DescriptionThe National Grid Reference SN 16790 18305 is the site of Taf Vale Junction, later Cardigan Junction, on the South Wales main line, 3.8km west of Whitland Railway Station (nprn 34752) where the Whitland and Taf Vale Railway, later Whitland and Cardigan Railway, branched northwards to Cardigan. The line, affectionately known as the 'Cardi Bach', opened throughout in 1886; the stations were: Llanfalteg (nprn 410170), Login (nprn 410171), Llanglydwen (nprn 410172), Rhydowen (nprn 410173), Llanfyrnach (nprn 410174), Glogue (nprn 410175), Crymmych Arms (nprn 410176), Boncath (nprn 410177), Kilgerran (nprn 410178) and Cardigan (nprn 41370). There was a small, rail-served quarry at Pen-lan, east of Rhydowen, a rail-served silver-lead mine (nprn 34019) at Llanfyrnach and a siding serving Glogue Slate Quarries (nprn 114990). The railway was eventually taken over by the Great Western Railway by 1890 and closed in 1963; it has since been demolished, although some bridges remain and some of the station buildings survive, converted into dwellings.
