Description
A principal station on the South Wales Railway, from 1883 the Great Western Railway's South Wales main line, the station opened in 1850. It was enlarged and new buildings erected in 1928: a 16-bay five storey brick office building, with a 12-bay two storey building adjoining on the east, front Queensway, a dual-carriageway road built on the site of the goods yard, which, along with the exit ramps from a nearby multi-storey carpark, has severed the original Station Approach access from the High Street. The station underwent major remodelling with the construction of a futuristic-looking metal-clad booking hall, concourses and footbridge, opening on 13 September 2010.
