Description
This Institute was built in the simplified Dutch style in 1904 of grey Pennant stone, with extensive red brick detail. It has a slate roof with two large ventilators to the ridge and an east end gable chimney of red brick. It is two storeys, set on high basement and has an entrance front (W) of five bays, divided by red brick pilaster-strips. There is a moulded brick stringcourses between storeys, also at sill and window-head levels. In the centre of the gable is a clock with a brick surround. The basement and ground floor windows have twentieth century glazing, segmental heads and brick surrounds whilst there are tall, round arched first floor windows with brick surrounds and terracotta keystones. These windows have been blocked.

Attached towards the east end is a lower four storey former caretaker's house which is now used as medical centre. The house is of three narrow bays, rendered with brick detail to quoins, and window surrounds with twentieth century glazing. It has a slate roof and broad south end gable brick chimney stack.

It is listed despite some alterations, as a well-designed and prominently located former colliery workmen's hall, its detail and large size testament to the importance of the local coal industry during the Edwardian period.
