Description
Over 46 acres in extent, Bargoed Park is a significant park dating from the Edwardian period. Originally rented by Gelligaer Parish Council from the Hanbury Family ? industrialists from Pontypool ? for a sum of £25 per annum until the park was purchased outright in 1929 for the sum of £550. Extensions to the park's area occurred in 1950 when land to the north and south was acquired by the Gelligaer Urban District Council, and again in 1951 when the land upon which the athletics track and grandstand were constructed was gained. Wrought iron gates on Wood Street were erected in 1952 to commemorate the Festival of Britain. The park includes three rugby pitches and a football pitch in addition to the athletics field. There is also a children's playground. Recent additions include a skate park.
