Description
Known as `Cefn Vaults? or simply `The Vaults? until the turn of the twentieth century, currently (2018) the Old Vaults has been re-purposed as a Chinese takeaway. The former public house is located at the junction of Well Street and Mount Pleasant, and the sharp angle at which these two streets meet affects the south-west corner of the building, which angles inwards in short south and south-west walls giving the wing of the building facing Well Street a pentagonal form. A rear wing projects in a right angle from near the north-east end of the main wing. This is also angled to match Mount Pleasant so that, with the garden wall which connects the western walls of both wings, the plan of the site is roughly triangular with a small projection of the main wing to the north east. The two-storey building faces Mill Street. The upper storey has three vertical windows, framed in black, and a larger window to the right. The lower story has a small rectangular window to the left of the doorway and three larger arched windows to the right, all framed in black. The window furthest to the right is lower than the others. All three arched windows had frosted glass with writing, above which were three smaller mullioned lights. The main frosted section of the widow next to the door has been replaced with one stating `Chinese OLD VAULTS? with the telephone number in red letters. Of the two that remain, one reads `ISLAND GREEN ALES?. The short corner walls at the south-west end of the building have large windows in both the first and second storeys, taking up much of the walls. There are three chimneys ? one to the rear of the south-west end and two towards the north-east end, one in the main wing and one in the rear wing.
