Description
A second mill (after Wheeler Paper Mill [nprn 409872]) began making paper at Caerwys in 1822; it was known as Afonwen Mill. Both mills had three beating-engines at work in 1851. Sometime in the 1850s, Afonwen Mill ceased production and in 1867 was advertised for let. The outcome is not known; however, the first edition of the Ordnance Survey 25in mapping of 1871 shows 'Paper Mills', complete with two ponds on the Afon Wen for providing water power, whereas by the 1899 edition the site is shown as a Portland Cement Works.
