Description
Townhill Housing Estate was built as a response to the 1919 Housing Act. Hundreds of Swansea's slums were cleared and new housing built from the 1920s onwards. Thoughts for a housing scheme were first realised following the 1906 Housing Reform and the Garden City Movement, with plans submitted by several architects and an 'exhibition' of affordable housing built on Mayhill, adjacent to Townhill. This site was chosen for it's clean air. In 1912 construction was to begin, but the first world war intervened and only 6 houses were completed, still standing as numbers 2-12 (even) Islwyn Road.
