Description
A pair of office and support buildings constructed c.1950 at a time of great expansion of the steelworks which were established in 1896 by John Summers & Sons. The Second World War had increased demand for steel sheeting and during the post war period of the 1950's, the workforce rose to 10,000 on a site that was said to be over 8 miles wide . They are built in a modernist style influenced by the Festival of Britain and with a surrounding and integral contemporary designed garden and landscape. Built from brown brick with a red brick plinth, they are two long two-storey buildings with lower entrance wings linked by a wide flat central entrance arch. The windows are a mixture of 6 and 9 light and are metal framed with raised cement surrounds. There is a hipped roof to the main ranges and a flar roof to the lower entrance wings.
