Description
Llangollen Village Green is a former recreational site in use until its purchase by the Vale of Llangollen Railway Company according to the terms of the Llangollen Railway Act of 1860. The loss of the Green to the railway caused controversy and the railway company offered hundreds of pounds in compensation to the townspeople and a replacement recreation ground, situated further from the centre of the town, was laid out in the early 1870s. The once 5 acre site is commemorated in local street names such as Green Lane. It is most famous as the location of the ?Great Llangollen Eisteddfod? (Eisteddfod Fawr Llangollen) of 1858.
