Nantgaredig Intake Works form part of a system of water management and movement in the Tywi Valley. Water processed by the Felindre water treatment works is sourced from the Llyn Brianne Reservoir where it is released in controlled amounts into the River Tywi. Forty miles downstream the water is abstracted at the Nantgarredig Intake Works where it is transferred via low lifts, settling tanks and high lift pumps for 17 miles to the Lower Lliw Reservoir. Lower Lliw reservoir acts as a settlement and storage reservoir, from which the water is pumped one mile to the head of the treatment works at Felindre.
