Description
The Belle Vue Hotel has been heavily renovated, possibly being entirely rebuilt on the same plan, since the late-nineteenth century. The building, which mainly consists of two storeys with a third story added to the extreme rear, is situated at the corner of Glebeland Street and High Street with its main entrance facing High Street. It is built of brick ? the lower storey is painted white while the upper story is of red brick ? with stone dressings. Between the two storeys are two string courses, between which the brick has been painted black (formerly light blue). The High Street-facing wall is extremely narrow, barely wider than the entrance which sits under an arched pediment. The corner of the building is blunted and curved with features being carried across the corner. The corner of the first story has a large window with three main lights, with a pointed pediment over the central window, above which are three smaller mullioned lights. The first-storey windows on the Glebland Street face are vertical two- and three-light windows which are surmounted with smooth-faced rusticated panels within semi-circular arches. There is also a single door within a similar arch. The second storey has small vertical sash windows which are carried around onto the High Street face. There is also a central bay within which is a carved stone oval bearing the interlocking letters `W.W.N.? for W. W. Nell and Co., the former owners. Above the rear of the building is a third storey, the gable of which has two small vertical windows and faces Glebland Street.
