Description
Nantlle railway station at Tal-y-sarn, at the terminus of the London and North Western Railway.
From 1828 almost all slate extracted from the Nantlle area was transported by the horse-drawn Nantlle railway, a 3-ft 6-inch narrow gauge line that was the first public (as opposed to private) line laid down to serve the quarry industry. In 1867, the L&NWR standard gauge Caernarfon to Afon Wen branch was laid substantially on the same route as far as Penygroes. In 1872 a sub-branch to Tal-y-sarn was laid which then became the terminus of the Nantlle line.
