Description
Built in 1905 at a cost of £6,000, Mardy Workmen's Hall and Institute contained a library, large hall (capacity 1200), reading room and games rooms. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1922, claiming the life of the treasurer John Jones. The new insitute builiding opened in 1924 at a cost of £17,000 with assistance from the Miners' Welfare Fund. In keeping with institutes and welfare halls of the time it contained a public hall, lesser hall, library and reading room, billiards room, games room, and committee rooms. A cinema operated here from opening and had a capacity of 837 seats. Still in heavy use in the 1980s, particularly during the 1984-85 Miners' Strike, the closure of Mardy Colliery in 1991 took its toll on membership and the building fell into disrepair and disuse. Eventually demolished in 2008.
