Description
The original institute in Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen was erected on this site in 1898 using the tin sheets and wooden frame of a disused Swansea Church that had been bought for £8 and transported to the village. This burned down in 1928 and preparations were made to construct a new, permanent structure using a grant from the Miners' Welfare Fund. The new hall was formally opened by Sir Alfred Cope on 1 October 1932 and had cost nearly £15,000. It was the largest and most expensive miners institute in the Amman Valley. A cinema operated here with a capacity of 962 seats and the main hall featured a 30ft deep stage for theatrical performances. A dance hall was attached to the main auditorium. Demolished in 1995, the site is now occupied by the clubhouse of the Cwmgorse Rugby Football Club.
