Description
By 1920 it was estimated that there were some 4000 cinemas operating across Britain, and in 1928 Denbigh joined this new trend with the opening of the Scala Cinema on Love Lane. Like many early cinemas it appears to have utilised a conversion of an existing building, namely the rifle volunteers? hall. Operated by Deeside Enterprise Cinemas it offered a nightly showing, with prices ranging from 6d to 1s 3d, for the 450 stall or circle seats. By the 1950's the seating had decreased to 400, but showings were now twice nightly with matinees Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The screen at this time measured 14ft by 10 ? ft, while the proscenium arch was 20ft. In 1966 it was taken over by the Wedgewood Cinema Group who renamed it The Wedgewood, but closed in 1980, and is now in a state of dereliction.

The building was of a very simple Classical style, the stuccoed front decorated by two full height pilasters and a moulded stringcourse, and an entrance bay to the right. Probably during the 1970 change to the Wedgewood Group, stone cladding was added to the lower half of the facade and two round windows inserted. What remains of the interior indicates a barrel vaulted roof, supported by cast iron trusses, while the screen would have been located at the rear end of the interior.

In the late-1970s, the cinema was renamed the Wedgwood Cinema. The Wedgwood closed on 26 October 1980 and apart from a brief period in the late-1990s has ceased to be used as a cinema. The building is now in a derelict condition.
