Description
The open-air swimming baths in Hendy were constructed in 1932 by unemployed local miners and officially opened the following year. Managed by the local community for 50 years, ownership was transfered to the local council in 1983 in order to preserve the baths for future generations. A modernisation scheme was launched and the baths were refurbished. A major leak in 2001 prompted Carmarthenshire County Council to close the baths in 2002 and despite community efforts to rescue them, they were demolished in 2009.
