The Oval has been in largely continuous use as a football ground since the late-1880s. The first club to play at the Oval were Caernarfon Athletic who moved to the site in 1888. By the Edwardian period, the ground had gained a pavilion. In 1937, the Oval became the home ground of Caernarfon Town Football Club and it has remained in use for footballing purposes ever since. As a small ground, the Oval has relatively few comforts and much of the spectator accommodation is standing terraces. The purchase of surplus seats from Shrewsbury Town did, however, provide seating accommodation for a couple of hundred people in the Hendre End. The ground currently has a capacity of 3,000.
