Description
Markham Miners' Welfare Hall was constructed on land conveyed to the local welfare association in 1928. The land had formerly been part of the Berllan-Llwyd Farm. Markham Institute is unusual in that the main institute building and the public hall are separate constructions; the public hall is situated at the rear of the Institute building and faces onto Bryn Road (Grid Reference: SO1693301233). The institute building itself fronts onto Abernant Road. During the 1930s and until the 1960s, the public hall housed the local cinema which was operated by the welfare association. Both buildings have survived the closure of the local Abernant Colliery and remain active today.
