Description
Sardis Road, the home of Pontypridd Rugby Football Club, opened on 4 September 1974 and became the permanent home of Pontypridd RFC following the loss of their previous ground in Ynysangharad Park to the development of the A470. The site was once the location of Pwllgwaun Colliery (known locally as Dan's Muck Hole) and a memorial exists at the site to mark this. Consisting of two grand stands along the touchlines and open terracing at the Rhondda end, the stadium is typical of semi-professional rugby grounds in South Wales. The ground was used by the Celtic Warriors, one of the five original professional franchises in Welsh rugby, prior to their demise in 2004. During the 1991 Rugby World Cup, Sardis Road played host to the pool match between Argentina and Western Samoa. Other international sides have played here including South Africa and Australia.
