Description
The remains of the eighteenth-century Ty Maen field barn lies in Afan Argoed Country Park.
This 18th century, stone-built, roofless (formerly slated), field barn is situated down the sloping ground, at 170 metres altitude, some 50 metres higher up the hill than Ty Maen Farm.
It consists of a 3-bay barn with opposed threshing bay porch entrances, and an in-line single entry cow-house of 2-bays at the upper end. An internal doorway provided access for feed to cattle. The floors of both were pitched-stone with stone-slabs to the threshing-bay. Evidence of former tethering indicates they were in lines of six cattle facing a manger at each end wall. A single ventilation slit lights each line of cattle, at the manger. The barn has ventilation slits to sides and gable-end. The porches are open with segmental stone voussoirs to the threshing-bay doorways and to the cow-house doorway.
