Description
A stone head formerly at Basingwerk Secondary Modern School, Holywell, brought in by a pupil (encouraged to take an interest in the history of their own area and to bring in objects of interest) who claimed to have discovered it "in a field" near Holywell. The head nicknamed 'Casabubu' remained in the school for some years until retired to the history master's garden shed in Bangor, and was largely forgotten. The head was brought to the Royal Commission offices in 2011 by Maredudd ap Huw (National Library of Wales) and photographed before transfer to the National Museum of Wales.

The head measures approximately 10 in. by 6 in. It appears to be cast rather than carved, but is apparently weathered and not obviously modern. It has a passing resemblance to the head from Laugharne Castle said to be of Sir John Perrot (Jnl Pembs Hist Soc. 5). Its original function is uncertain but a socket at the back, still with traces of cement, suggests that it was fixed to a wall.

Information from Maredudd ap Huw. R.F. Suggett/RCAHMW/December 2011.
