This playing field is reported to have been used during wartime as a grass landing strip for the Piper Cub L4 aircraft of the US Army.
Event and Historical Information:
A miltary camp developed at Pontllanfraith provided a temporary home for the 204th, 207th and 87th Field Artillery Battalions of the US Army between February and June 1944. Each artillery battalion would have been accompanied by two reconnaissance aircraft and this field, previously used for travelling fairs and air shows, was utilised.
