Description
Part of the Maenofferen Slate Mine (NPRN 400427), the smithy forms the eastern unit of a workshop range (NPRN 415926). It measures 7.4m x 10.4m internally with a central doorway with windows either side in the south wall, and two four light windows in the north wall. Sections of tramway track still survive within the Smithy floor. The interior walls are rendered and pained white and there is a concrete floor upon which tramway track continuing in from the exterior was laid. Two forges, constructed of brick and each with their own individual brick chimney are located in the northern half of the unit and two louvered vents were constructed on apex of roof. A door through the east external wall leads to a coal store, measuring 2.1m x 3.3m internally with openings in the north and east walls. This was constructed as an extension to the main range and has a single pitch slate roof. An internal door through the west partition wall leads to the Saw Mill (NPRN 415931). The Smithy was decommissioned in 1999 and the majority of the equipment left in situ.
