Description
The first part of Maesteg Welfare Park opened on 6 June 1925 and was funded by a grant of over £6,000 from the Miners' Welfare Fund. Laid out on grounds owned by Maesteg Urban District Council (who undertook to maintain the facility), the park included a children's playground, bowling green, putting green, tennis courts and a well-appointed pavilion. The second part of the park was completed in the early 1930s by voluntary labour with playing fields laid out at the northern end. This limited development contrasted with the aims set out in the mid-1920s of a quite lavish park complete with three bowling greens numerous tennis courts, a bandstand, open-air dancehall, a nine-hole putting green and croquet lawns. These plans were never brought to fruition, however, and the park today retains much of its original layout.
