Description
Abertridwr Welfare Park was opened in July 1925 by North Lewis, Chairman of the South Wales Coalowners Association. At a cost of £4,748 (of which £3,500 was provided by the Miners' Welfare Fund and £1,245 by a levy on local miners' wages), the park provided a full-size bowling green, six tennis courts, a croquet lawn, skittle green, quoits pitches and children's play area. It was laid out on 12.5 acres of land purchased from the Aberfawr Estate at a cost of £1379. Later additions to the park included playing fields for football and rugby. At the time of opening it was hoped to build a foot racing track, open-air swimming baths, a bandstand and pavilion, though financial difficulties in the Aber Valley mitigated against their construction.
