Description
The former cottage NPRN416327 is fragmentary and may once have been part built of clay walls, some stone walls still in-situ (see sketch note), and is probably early-19th century in date. It measures approximately 7.45 by 5.45 metres plus footings of a building in-line to the east, probably a former cow-house, all shown as a long rectangle on the 1888 first edition OS map . In the east cross wall of the cottage there are remnants of a later brick fireplace and bread oven. These openings have iron supports to brick releiving arches. A corner of the west gable-end, now built in stone abutts a later, narrower, in-line, river stone addition to the west. This has a lateral doorway in the south wall, built partly with brick jambs. The map also shows another building parallel to the north, which has now totally disappeared, perhaps another cottage and cow-house.
Visited, due to planning application, Geoff Ward, 23/06/2011.
