Description
This site retains the ruins of a former cottage and associated livestock buildings, which are due to be removed when two new residential units are built. It is situated on a level raised flood plain close by the river Rheidol.
The former cottage is fragmentary and may once have been part built of clay walls, some stone walls still in-situ (see sketch plan), and is probably early-19th century in date. It measures approximately 7.45 by 5.45 metres plus footings of a building in-line to the east, probably a former cow-house, shown as a long rectangle on the 1888 first edition OS map of 1888. In the east cross wall of the cottage there are remnants of a later brick fireplace and bread oven. These openings have iron supports to brick releiving arches. A corner of the west gable-end, now built in stone abutts a later, narrower, in-line, river stone addition to the west. This has a lateral doorway in the south wall, built partly with brick jambs. The map also shows another building parallel to the north, which has now totally disappeared, perhaps another cottage and cow-house.
Against the south side of this vanished building is a double-unit pig sty with gable roof to the loft (see plan), built after 1905, as not shown on the second edition OS map. It is mostly built of river stone with some brick to openings and corners. Each pig unit has an entry and small window with shutters, and a yard. The entries have an iron girder as a lintel. The loft has a joist and board floor with end loading doorways and a central truss-partition in pine dividing it into 2-units. It has a corrugated-iron roof, and each unit has a window opening, latterly glazed. The yard walls arebuilt of concete blocks, each with a feed chute for slops made from half of a drainage pipe. On the north side there are iron posts of what was probably a hay-shed of 4-bays.
To the south of the pig sty, and at right angles, is an early to mid-20th century, purpose built cow-house unit, built of concrete blocks with asbestos roof. It consists of a lateral feed-passage with end entry and iron pipe stalls for 6 cows, and a separate dairy-room.
