Description
Nantgarw Colliery was the nearest deep mine to Cardiff and was opened in 1911 when two large shafts were sunk. The colliery was abandoned in 1927, but re-opened in 1937 for a short while before work was suspended for the duration of the second World War. In 1946 the original colliery buildings were demolished and newly designed facilities were erected in their place. Nantgarw Colliery was merged with Windsor Colliery in 1975 and mining carried on until the mid 1980s when there were mass pit closures in the south Wales valleys. A monument (nprn 419876) incorporating one of the colliery's winding sheaves has been erected at the nearby Cefn Coed roundabout.
