Theatre Royal Cinema was built in 1910 after the previous Theatre Royal building was destroyed in a fire. The New Theatre Royal was part of the Arthur Carlton circuit and the building contained a roof garden built over shops on the side of the building. In 1930 the stage was removed and the building converted into a single-screen cinema called the Royal Super Cinema. Refurbishment took place in 1947 which reduced the capacity to 915. Further renovations took place in the 1980s which closed off the circle and brought the screen forward, reducing capacity further to 300. A second screen was added in the 1990s but the cinema closed in 2008 despite local opposition.
