The spring water issuing from near Venn, Copybush and Newton was dammed in the late 1930s to create a reservior for fire fighting purposes at the Royal Naval Munititons Depot Newton Noyes. The water was piped to a system of hydrants in the underground magazines and throughout the large mine assembly works (see NPRN 416747).
