The original premises for Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr at Talbot Street, Gowerton, were built for Gowerton County School in 1898, re-modelled in 1907-08, and extended in 1931. The original building was erected by Bennett Brothers of Swansea at a cost of £3,100. Extensions and remodelling was carried out in 1907-08 due to increasing pupil numbers (by this time around 270). In 1931, shower baths adjacent to the gymnasium were built together with cloakrooms and a dining hall. Following the opening of a Girls' Grammar School on Cecil Road in 1940, the site at Talbot Street became a Boys' Grammar School. Both schools merged in 1973 to form Gowerton Comprehensive School with the Middle School at Talbot Street and the Upper School at Cecil Road before moving fully to the Cecil Road site in 1987. Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr, Swansea Unitary Authority's first Welsh-language comprehensive school, then solely occupied the site at Talbot Street, with the building undergoing extensive refurbishment and alterations, carried out once again by Bennett Brothers of Swansea. The comprehensive school caters for pupils aged 11-19, covering a wide catchment. As part of Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools and Colleges programme of investment, extensive refurbishment work at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr from 2020-21 ensured a new two-storey teaching block, kitchen and canteen/hall, the creation of new sports facilities along with a remodelled drama studio.
