Description
Ysgol Maes Hyfryd is a purpose built special school which opened in 2009, following reorganisation of special education needs in Deeside and surrounding areas. The school is adjacent to, and shares the site of Flint High School (NPRN: 417121). There are approx. 135 pupils on roll, aged between 11 and 18.

The design was undertaken by Flintshire County Council Design Consultancy with building work undertaken by Wynne Construction. The single storey school is a steel-framed building with an exterior of rendered masonry and proprietary cladding with an insulated metal roof.

The main accommodation features classrooms, therapy suite, sensory suite, independent Living Skills Area, library and ICT room and multi-purpose hall and dining area.

A number of key sustainability features are incorporated into the school to include wind turbine generation, solar thermal panels on the roof, occupancy sensing for lighting, under floor heating in all teaching areas, water leakage control, building management systems, optimization of natural ventilation and daylight and sustainable urban drainage system. Associated works include a car parking area and landscaping.
