Abertillery Primary School was previously housed in the former building of the Gelli-Grug Secondary School. A school was originally founded in Abertillery in 1846, and moved from Alma Street into the Secondary School building in September 1987. In 1990 it merged with the nearby Gelli-Grug Infant school and a nursery unit was added in 1998. In 2008 the school catered for approx. 340 children, aged 3-11 years. Abertillery Primary School closed in 2016 and the former buildings were demolished in phases with new school buildings constructed on site to form the new Tillery Street Campus as part of the new Abertillery Learning Community.
