It houses an Individual Function Switch control panel removed from the adjacent Abercynon Signal Box (nprn 420817) and two workstations with Solid State Interlocking new in 2008. Its purpose was to enable more frequent services to be run on the lines betweeen Aberdare, Merthyr and Cardiff. The functions of the Centre were due to be transferred to the Cardiff Rail Operating Centre in 2014.
