Ysgol Brynrefail is a bilingual community comprehensive school catering for 11 to 18 year olds. The school has approx. 780 pupils on roll with a catchment of Llanrug and the surrounding rural area. Ysgol Brynrefail is maintained by Gwynedd Unitary Local Education Authority and celebrated it centenary in 2000.

Aerial photography taken on 13th June 2008 by RCAHMW revealed non-archaeological cropmarks on the playing of the school.
