Cwmgwineu Colliery is located within the Margam Forest, east of Port Talbot. A trial level is denoted on the 1st edition 1877 Ordnance County Series mapping of Glamorgan (sheet XXV 15). By 1899 a colliery had been established with a reservoir. The colliery continued to expand with a tramway being installed by 1918. By the mid 1900's the colliery was in decline however, and it is noted on the 1938 OS mapping as an old coal level, with disused tramway.
