Description
Newbridge-on-Wye is situated roughly between Rhayader and Builth Wells. As it provided a safe crossing point across the River Wye, if was utilised, historically, as a stop off point for drovers, who moved livestock from place to place. This led to the formation of a settlement, one which included a large number of pubs. A statue of a drover on the village green celebrates its origins.
Newbridge-on-Wye was also the site of a railway station on the Mid Wales Railway, until its closure on December 31, 1962. The site of the station is now occupied by a housing estate, although the old railway bridge still remains.
