Pencaerau stands at the northern end of the level summit of an isolated hill about 2km south of Neath. The southern end of the fort is indicated by a much spread bank, 6m wide and half a metre high. The vague remnant of a similarbank follows the western edge of the hill, and on the north-west a natural gully breaking through this may mark the site of an entrance. On the north and east the bank is practically non-existent but presumably followed the natural edge. This would make the enclosure oval in plan, 45m long from north to south by 35m wide enclosing 0.1 ha.
Two small hollows among rock outcrops near the northern end of the fort are probably quarries rather than huts, but there is a possible round hut about 7m in diameter at the eastern side.
