Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun opened in 1995 and is a designated Welsh Medium Community Comprehensive School, controlled by Rhondda Cynon Taf Unitary Authority. In 2013 the school catered for 11-18 year olds and had approx. 970 pupils on roll.
As part of Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme, in 2021-22 demolition of the caretaker’s house took place along with the removal of the school’s temporary classrooms. In their place, a new eight-classroom block was built which includes community rooms, along with school drama and music facilities. Provision was also made for a new school reception, sports hall, fitness suite and changing rooms, along with a 45-space parking area and cycle store. These developments has created space for additional 187 pupils. Contractor Willmott Dixon. Cost £12m.
