Description
St John's Church is situated in a remote location some 700m from Maesteilo House (NPRN 409605), within a rectilinear graveyard bounded by a road on its north side. The church is not depicted on 1887 Ordnance Survey mapping, but was present by 1906. 1906 Ordnance Survey mapping also depicts a Church House some 20m east of the church, and a Sunday School. The Sunday school is depicted as a small building, standing on the roadside, some 140m east-north-east of the church. It is not depicted on modern Ordnance Survey mapping.
The church is constructed of crazed-rubble walls in grey conglomerate with yellow stone dressings and purple voussoirs of Sawdde stone. An expensive construction, it was built in 1900-3 to designs of David Jenkins on behalf of the Mansels of Maesteilo. It consists of nave with east bellcote and north-west tower-porch with pyramidal cap, and nave with north and south transepts. The interior is broad and old fashioned with Bath stone chancel arch. Fittings include a walnut pulpit with three carved saints in a rustic Baroque style, brought from Venice.
