Llantwit Major School was a mixed comprehensive school catering for 11-18 year olds, covering an extensive site which included the leisure centre. The school was established in 1973 and has approx. 1000 pupils on roll from Llantwit Major and outlying rural villages. Under Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme, reorganisation took place and the secondary school is now the site of new 3-19 age Llantwit Learning Community comprising the amalgamated Eagleswell and Llanilltud Fawr primary schools in a new build 420 place primary school (Ysgol Y Ddraig). As part of this development, Llantwit Major School's exisiting building underwent refurbishment and connected to a new four-storey extension building, constructed by Boyugues and designed by HLM Architects. Additionally, a multi-use games area, featuring three courts, and an all-weather 3G pitch was installed. These enhanced sporting facilities are also available for community use outside school hours. The project was completed in 2017.
