Description
The Pavilion in Caernarfon was built in 1877 to provide a permanent public eisteddfod building for cultural events. I was built of corrugated iron with linings of felt and wood, and accommodated an audience of about 7,000. The Pavilion hosted a number of events including trade fairs and political meetings. David Lloyd George spoke at a meeting there in the early 1900s and Paul Robson sung there in 1934. The pavilion was on lease to the government from 1939 to 1956 and after this the building had deteriorated considerably and much maintenance work was required. In 1961 it was decided that the building be demolished, and on October 21st. 1961 there was a 'Last Farewell' concert broadcast on BBC Radio.
