Description
Situated at what appears to be the highest point in the Park is this rectangular structure with a dome roof 18m x 11m and approx 2.3m high. It is mainly built of brick, but there is some concrete. The corners are reinforced by buttresses. There are one or two odd features. There is short flight of steps giving access to the top on the west side. The exterior shows the remains of iron lugs made to contain a band of woven steel mesh tape, fragments of which show it to have been about 15cms wide. A band at the top of the tank near the rim and two adjacent rows lower down at about mid-height. Perhaps used to reinforce the structure when full of water. The interior has been filled in (it may however have been covered when in use) and mounded over with earth. Would have provided about 10m head of water and probably intended for domestic use. Possibly supplied via the ram engine (site NPRN ???). Shown on 2nd edition 25 inch OS map of 1912. Probably mid- late 19th century in date.
