Description
This is one of the two entrances leading to the west front of the mansion. However this access has been long abandoned and the main entrance (for the public) is by way of the stable yard. The front of the house is accessed only by a minor drive from the south now effectively a dead end, which was once part of this former ?drive through? route. The entrance consists of a pair of spiked wrought iron gates flanked by two fine square section sandstone pillars 5m apart. Each is ca 2m high and 0.60m square. The front and rear of these is decorated with a cornucopia and ?hypodermic syringe? designs below swags of beribboned flowers. The fence continues to either side of the stone pillars and is terminated at each end by a substantial pointed timber post. See also NPRN 27133 for description of S Gate.
