Description
A fine war memorial designed by the architect Giles Gilbert Scott and erected in 1919. It is set into the south churchyard wall west of the main entrance and opposite Hanmer Mere. Its prominent position contributes to the overall historical integrity of the parish church.
A freestone red sandstone war memorial in the style of a medieval churchyard cross, comprising an octagonal shaft with crucifix on an octagonal base. The base has a commemorative inscription in low relief and roll call in inscribed letters of the fallen of the First World War. The tapering shaft has a cornice incorporating a frieze of four-leaf flowers and incorporates two slender attached shafts that sprout pinnacles flanking the crucifix, and which support the gabled canopy.
To the right and left of the base are added Second World War (1939-45) memorial inscriptions on polished granite.
